AUTHORITIES, BOARDS, AND COMMISSIONS

The Town of Culpeper has over 60 citizens serving on its’ authorities, boards, and commissions.  These boards provide a wide variety of valuable technical, advisory, and administrative services to the town and its residents.  Serving on an authority, board or commission is a rewarding experience and an excellent way to make a personal contribution to the town’s growth.

The Appointment Process

Appointments to authorities, boards, and commissions are made as needed by the Town Council following the monthly meeting of the Council Personnel and Ordinance Committee.

Length of service on authorities, boards, and commissions varies from one to five years, depending on the specific authorities, boards, or commissions. 

To be appointed to an authority, board, or commission in the Town of Culpeper, an individual must:

  • Be a town resident (unless stated otherwise in the by-laws of a particular authority, board or commission
  • Submit an application to the Town Clerk’s Office.

  • Not be delinquent in any taxes, fees, or fines due to the town.

Once the application is received in the Town Clerk’s office, the applicant’s request is acknowledged. The Council Personnel and Ordinance Committee meets monthly on the 4th Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Council/Committee Meeting Room at Town Hall. At this meeting, applicants may be interviewed by the Council Personnel and Ordinance Committee in closed session.  The recommendation of the Personnel and Ordinance Committee is then forwarded to Town Council for action at their next regular meeting.  The applicant is then notified in writing of the appointment, along with the length of term and expiration date.

If an application is received for an authority, board, or commission that does not have a vacancy, it is held until a vacancy occurs.  The applicant is then contacted and an interview may be scheduled with the Council Personnel and Ordinance Committee at its next regular meeting.
